Eliminating the like button has been part of Facebook&#039;s blogification transformation.  Along with allowing open conversation on posts, they&#039;ve added a subscribe button to personal pages (it hasn&#039;t shown up on the place pages yet). 

The like button still allows users to receive FB updates from the NPO on their news feed, similar to an internal RSS feed.  Relevant, engaging, high quality posts are important to keep those who follow (&quot;Like&quot;) engaged versus those who stumble on the page.
