Here’s our roundup of conferences in the nonprofit and social change sectors coming up in 2013. This has become an annual tradition here at Socialbrite, and we hope you’ll bookmark this page and return to it throughout the year — we’ll be updating it throughout 2013 as more conference details firm up.

We’ll be reporting on many of these events and invite you to share your coverage or observations on Socialbrite, or let us know and we’ll tweet it or Facebook it. Throughout the year we’ll publish monthly calendars on the first of the month.

Food + Justice = Democracy	Jan. 18	Chicago
This national meeting is a call to action for activists, urban farmers, food system workers, immigrant rights advocates and anyone seeking to explore community-driven solutions to promote food equity through the lens of race, class and gender.
Intersection Event	Jan. 19	Mtn. View, Calif.

World Economic Forum	Jan. 23-27	Davos-Klosters, Switzerland
For more than 40 years, Davos has provided an unrivalled platform for leaders from all walks of life to shape the global, regional, industry and business agendas at the beginning of the year. She’s Geeky	Jan. 25-27	Mountain View, Calif.
She’s Geeky convenes to inspire women for the future, creating a space to connect women from diverse STEM (sci-tech) communities. Washington Nonprofit Conference	Feb. 7-8	Washington, DC
The Washington Nonprofit Conference is an annual two-day event where more than 800 fundraising and marketing professional in the nonprofit and commercial sectors gather to exchange innovative marketing and fundraising ideas, generate insightful solutions and think creatively. The conference hopes to offer a platform for improving public awareness and receptivity to direct and interactive market-driven philanthropy.
Social Enterprise	Feb. 9-10	Boston
This year’s theme at the Social Enterprise conference at Harvard is Create. Connect. Commit. The gathering’s organizers hope to catalyze a forum to create, to enable individuals and organizations to connect and to inspire one another to commit.
Marin Nonprofit Forum	Feb. 14	San Rafael, Calif.
The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership in Marin brings together experts and practitioners for learning and reflection by convening the bi-annual Marin Nonprofit Conference and issue-based Forums. This year’s Nonprofit Forum will identify what we have in common and how we can tell that story in a way that builds partnerships with donors and clients.
Media That Matters	Feb. 15	Washington, DC
Media That Matters (not to be confused with the long-running Media That Matters in B.C.) is an annual conference presented by the Center for Social Media at American University. It’s designed for established and aspiring filmmakers, nonprofit communications leaders, funders and students who want to learn and share cutting-edge practices to make their media matter.
Strategic Co-Funding: A Grantmaker Convening	Feb. 21	Washington, DC
Grantmakers for Effective Organizations brings together a group of 150 grantmakers to explore different approaches to strategic co-funding. This daylong convening will offer participants opportunities to deepen their knowledge and advance their practice around key areas such as building trust; developing joint strategies, goals and common processes and more.
Wisdom 2.0	Feb. 21-24	San Francisco

ACM: Computer Supported Cooperative Work	Feb. 23-27	San Antonio, Texas

TED	Feb. 25-Mar 1	Long Beach, Calif.

TEDActive	Feb.25-Mar 1	Palm Springs, Calif.

Clinton Global Initiative University	April 5-7	St. Louis

Netroots Nation amplifies progressive voices by providing an online and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more effective in using technology to influence the public debate. Indie Web Camp	June 22-23	Portland, Ore.
Indie Web Camp is a regular gathering of web creators building and sharing open Web technologies to advance the state of the independent Web and empower users to own their own identities and content on the Web. Participants get together for a weekend to talk about what has been done in the field, what still needs to be done and then spend a day hacking and creating.
Aspen Ideas Festival	June 26-July 2	Aspen, Colo.
The Aspen Ideas Festival will gather some of the most interesting thinkers and leaders from around the U.S. and abroad to discuss their work, the issues that inspire them and their ideas. SOCAP11 — the fourth annual Social Capital Markets conference — has announced that more than 50 global social entrepreneurs have been awarded a full scholarship to the event taking place Sept. 6-9 in San Francisco.

Among those attending will be:

Agora Partnerships expanding its impact beyond Central America roots

One of the coolest people I met at Sustainatopia in Miami last week was Daniela Hammeken, director of strategic partnerships for Agora Partnerships, a nonprofit that works with small companies in Central America to provide access to knowledge, capital and networks.

Based in Washington, D.C., and Managua, Nicaragua, Agora (tagline: “fighting poverty by enhancing entrepreneurship”) is a 6-year-old nonprofit that’s creating an entrepreneurial community, helping small to mid-size companies connect with each other and gain access to the financing they need from national and international investors.

Each of the nine companies Agora works with has an interesting story to tell. One makes toy blocks, similar to Legos, derived from woods in the Honduras rainforest; with every toy sold, the buyer has the choice of supporting reforestation or an educational program in Honduras. Another small enterprise is run by a Guatemalan woman who increases the supply chain of women artisans in Guatemala to make their products more widely available.

“It’s really about using creativity and innovation to not only sell your main product but thinking about sustainability and the values in how they’re produced,” she says.

Impact investing is just beginning to come to the region, Daniela said. Applicants that come to Agora should be profitable businesses based in Central America, their business plan must incorporate social or environmental sustainability, they need to have fewer than 100 employees and generate between $50,000 and $1 million a year in revenue, with a goal of targeting that same amount in growth capital. A second crop of companies will encompass those in Mexico as well with other Latin American countries to follow.

Agora’s Accelerator program offers companies better information about financial management, marketing and regional networks as well as entry into an investor conference where they can connect with investors.

Daniela, a native of Mexico who attended NYU, has a background in microfinance, and her interest in getting basic needs met for underserved populations eventually led her to the impact investing field. Agora Partnerships, it appears, is a small organization with the potential for big impact.

Every year I pick a new conference (or two) that I really want to attend because I’ve heard it will blow my mind, because I want to connect with new people, because I know it’s good to stretch the mind and the soul. This year, it’s SOCAP.

In looking into the conference, I stumbled upon a post by my friend Emily Goligoski about a contest where you can win a pass to the conference. Yes, the contest has some element of voting but it’s not everything (thankfully) and regardless of if I win, I like the question they’re asking.

The Social Capital Markets Conference is a gathering of investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators at the intersection of money and meaning. SOCAP has spent the last two years defining the social enterprise movement. This year, more than 1,200 investors, donors, entrepreneurs, and innovators will decide: What’s Next?

A recent report by Hope Consulting on Money for Good revealed there is a $120 billion untapped market of individual investors looking to make a positive environmental and social impact with their dollars. With deserving entrepreneurs looking for funds to make that impact, the challenge is to discover:

What’s next? How will social enterprise unlock the $120 billion market opportunity for impact investment?

SOCAP will be exploring this question throughout the conference, but they want to hear from you.

The challenge? Tell them (in 500 words or less) what’s next in social enterprise to unlock the $120 billion market opportunity for individual impact investment, and you could win a scholarship to this year’s SOCAP, valued at $1,195, as well as the opportunity to be published in TriplePundit, an innovative new media company pushing the conversation forward about sustainable business in the 21st century.

How To Win

Because nobody is as smart as everybody, everyone is invited to vote on their favorite posts to determine the winners. The top 10 entries by votes are considered for the prize.

The Challenge Sponsors will then evaluate the top ten entries and select five to be featured on triple pundit, as well as the overall SOCAP scholarship winner.

How to enter

The Challenge is now open for entries. You do have to create a Myoo Create account (I just did, not terribly painful). Then by Sept. 7, 2010 you must submit the following information:

• blog title
• short description of blog
• full 500 word publishable blog post
• profile image of yourself to accompany blog post

The judges will evaluate the entries on the following criteria:

• 50% on the strength of your ideas and how you present them
• 25% on the originality of your ideas
• 25% on the quality of the writing
